Saudi Arabia has announced a major development plan for southern Yemen worth around $500 million, following the withdrawal of the United Arab Emirates from areas previously under its influence. The projects aim to rebuild infrastructure, provide essential services, and support the local population after months of conflict and political tension.
The new initiative includes the construction of hospitals, schools, and roads, along with fuel donations to increase electricity production. Saudi authorities also announced the construction of a mosque on the island of Socotra, named “The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques,” referencing the official title of the Saudi king. Socotra, a strategic island in the Arabian Sea, had been controlled by the UAE for several years until Saudi-backed operations reclaimed it recently.
Saudi Defence Minister Khalid bin Salman met with leaders of Yemen’s internationally recognized government and members of the Presidential Leadership Council to reaffirm Riyadh’s support. The kingdom said its aim is to enhance security and stability in Yemen and to contribute to building a better future for the country’s people.
The announcement comes amid growing tensions between Saudi Arabia and the UAE. Both countries were previously part of a coalition fighting the Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen’s ongoing civil war, which has created one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises. However, differences between Riyadh and Abu Dhabi have grown over political influence, security concerns, and regional strategy.
The Saudi-backed offensive earlier this month pushed back the Southern Transitional Council, a UAE-backed separatist group, from key southern areas, including positions near the Saudi border. Riyadh described the STC’s advance as a threat to its national security and called on the UAE to withdraw support for the group.
Experts say the $500 million development plan signals Saudi Arabia’s intention to strengthen its influence in southern Yemen and assert leadership in the region. By focusing on reconstruction and public welfare projects, Saudi Arabia aims to stabilize the region, support the local population, and reduce the appeal of separatist forces.
The new projects are expected to be implemented across ten provinces in southern Yemen, with an emphasis on essential infrastructure, education, and health services. Officials hope that these efforts will also help restore confidence among Yemenis in the government and in the kingdom’s ability to provide long-term support.
Saudi Arabia’s announcement highlights the shifting balance of power in Yemen, showing that Riyadh is taking a more direct role in securing its southern neighbor while managing tensions with the UAE. The initiative also underscores the kingdom’s broader strategy to maintain influence in the Arabian Peninsula and counter rival forces in the region.
