Saudi Arabia Secures Position on IMO Council for 2026–2027

Post by : Mara Rahim

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has achieved membership in the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council for the 2026–2027 term. This significant election, held in London, UK, saw Saudi Arabia garnering 142 votes from member nations, underscoring its pivotal role in the global maritime sector. The IMO, a specialized agency of the United Nations, is tasked with setting international benchmarks for maritime safety, mitigating pollution from vessels, and fostering the protection of marine ecosystems.

Saleh Al-Jasser, Minister of Transport and Logistic Services and Chairman of the Transport General Authority (TGA), expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques and HRH the Crown Prince, acknowledging their unwavering support for the Kingdom's transportation initiatives. He noted that Saudi Arabia's election stands as a testament to the international community's faith in the country's capacity and its burgeoning influence within global maritime discussions.

The TGA emphasized that this accomplishment is a direct result of the robust backing from the Kingdom's leadership toward enhancing the maritime transport sector. It symbolizes ongoing advancement in line with Saudi Vision 2030, which aspires to fortify Saudi Arabia’s stature as a major contributor to international transportation and logistics. The nation has already made strides with modern port developments and an advanced regional fleet that boosts its global competitiveness.

Positioned along crucial trade channels, Saudi Arabia’s ports facilitate about 13% of the world's trade, particularly through the Red Sea. The National Transport and Logistics Strategy is set to enhance port productivity, streamline trade processes, and promote marine tourism, including cruise services. These steps are fundamental in reinforcing the Kingdom’s strategic role as a maritime hub.

Saudi Arabia's election to the IMO Council also emphasizes its significant involvement in forming international maritime laws. The Kingdom continues to play a crucial role in enhancing maritime security, advocating for safe shipping practices, and supporting global marine environmental protection initiatives. Through its participation in the council, Saudi Arabia aims to collaborate with fellow member nations to implement international maritime policies, foster sustainable practices, and share knowledge to improve global maritime transportation systems.

Additionally, this membership will bolster Saudi Arabia's influence in discussions surrounding maritime safety, environmental conservation, and sustainable transport measures. It enables the nation to engage in essential decisions, initiatives, and partnerships that will shape the maritime industry's future on a global scale.

This achievement is a clear indication of Saudi Arabia's strategic vision to assert its position as a pivotal player in global maritime affairs. The Kingdom’s ongoing investments in modernizing its ports, expanding its shipping fleet, and refining its logistics framework further illustrate its commitment to meeting international standards, safeguarding marine life, and ensuring safe, dependable shipping operations.

Through this prominent role, Saudi Arabia reaffirms its dedication to fostering international maritime collaboration, developing robust regulations, and pursuing joint ventures that enhance global maritime trade and security. The Kingdom's proactive involvement in the IMO Council further establishes its reputation as an influential maritime leader, embodying the vision for sustainable sectoral growth.
