Early Saturday, Russia executed one of its most substantial winter offensives against Ukraine's energy systems, leading to extensive blackouts and heating failures nationwide. Explosions rang out in Kyiv, with officials reporting that over 1.2 million homes and structures lost power.
Kyiv faced dire conditions, affecting nearly 6,000 residences without heat as temperatures plummeted to -10°C, adding to the struggles of inhabitants already dealing with prior disruptions to the heating network.
Kyiv’s Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed one death and four injuries in the capital, while Kharkiv reported 19 casualties, including a child.
Ukrainian officials stated that over 800,000 residences in Kyiv and 400,000 in the Chernihiv region were still powerless after the assaults. Ukraine's air force noted that Russia deployed 375 drones and 21 missiles, featuring the uncommon Tsirkon ballistic missiles during the nighttime operation.
This strike is marked as Russia's most significant winter attack against Ukraine’s power grid, which has been a continued target since the invasion commenced in 2022. Countless Ukrainians now experience electricity availability for only a few hours daily, while many regions are deprived of heat and water.
These strikes coincided with U.S.-mediated peace discussions in Abu Dhabi involving representatives from Russia and Ukraine, with aims towards a possible ceasefire. Nonetheless, no significant advancements or compromises have been reported thus far.
