Russian forces launched fresh attacks on Ukraine early Saturday, striking the country’s two largest cities, Kyiv and Kharkiv. Officials said at least 13 civilians were injured as drones and missiles hit residential areas, hospitals, and key infrastructure.
The attacks caused fires, power cuts, and serious damage, once again putting civilians at risk during Ukraine’s harsh winter.
In the capital city Kyiv, Mayor Vitali Klitschko said two people were injured and taken to hospital in serious condition. Explosions were reported in districts on both sides of the Dnipro River, which divides the city.
Ukraine’s air force confirmed that Russia used both missiles and drones during the assault. Kyiv military administration chief Tymur Tkachenko said drone strikes were recorded in at least three districts, with fires breaking out in two locations.
Kyiv has faced repeated overnight attacks since the beginning of the year. These strikes have damaged electricity and heating networks, leaving hundreds of residential buildings without power and warmth. Emergency teams have been working non-stop to restore services as temperatures dropped to minus 13 degrees Celsius.
Many residents sought help at government-run “Points of Invincibility,” centers that provide heating, electricity, food, and basic services during blackouts.
Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city and located close to the Russian border, was also heavily targeted. Mayor Ihor Terekhov said Russian drones struck several districts, injuring 11 people.
According to city officials, the attacks hit a dormitory for displaced people, a hospital, and a maternity hospital. Medical staff and emergency workers rushed to help the injured and secure damaged buildings.
Kharkiv has been a frequent target throughout the war due to its location near Russia. Civilian areas have repeatedly come under fire, raising concerns about safety and humanitarian conditions.
The latest attacks took place shortly after representatives from Ukraine, Russia, and the United States began talks in the United Arab Emirates aimed at finding a solution to the nearly four-year-long conflict.
Despite these discussions, fighting on the ground continues, with civilians bearing the greatest burden. Power shortages, freezing weather, and constant air raid alerts have become part of daily life for millions of Ukrainians.
As winter continues, damage to critical infrastructure makes survival more difficult, especially for families, children, and the elderly. The latest strikes underline the ongoing human cost of the war and the urgent need for a lasting ceasefire.
