A Russian drone strike in Ukraine’s southeastern Zaporizhzhia region has killed three civilians and injured several others, Ukrainian officials said. The overnight attack is another painful reminder that the war, now nearing its fourth year, continues to take innocent lives despite ongoing peace efforts.
According to Ukraine’s emergency services, the victims included two women aged 26 and 50, and a 62-year-old man. A private home was completely destroyed, while nearby buildings were badly damaged. Firefighters worked through the night to control fires caused by the strike, as residents stood among burned vehicles and broken walls, trying to understand what had happened to their neighborhood.
Regional authorities said the Zaporizhzhia region has been under intense pressure. In just the last 24 hours, Russian forces carried out hundreds of attacks across dozens of settlements. Many of these areas are close to the front line, where civilians still live because they have nowhere else to go.
Ukraine’s air force reported that Russia launched more than 100 drones overnight, with most of them being shot down. Still, even a few drones getting through can cause deadly damage. Small towns and villages, often with limited air defenses, remain especially vulnerable.
Zaporizhzhia is one of the regions claimed by Russia since the start of the full-scale invasion in 2022. Large parts of the area are under Russian control, and fighting there has increased in recent weeks. Homes, power lines, and basic services are often caught in the middle of the conflict.
The violence has not been limited to one region. Russian drones also struck the southern port city of Odesa, where a large fire broke out at an industrial site. Warehouses and trucks were damaged, though officials said no one was hurt in that attack. Earlier this week, another strike on Odesa killed four people, including an elderly man who later died in hospital.
These attacks come even as Ukraine and Russia have held talks aimed at reducing tensions. While discussions have taken place with international support, the fighting on the ground has not slowed. Both sides continue to accuse each other of targeting civilian areas, claims that each denies.
For ordinary Ukrainians, the impact is clear and heartbreaking. Families are losing loved ones, homes are being destroyed, and fear has become part of daily life. Children are growing up to the sound of sirens, and many people sleep fully dressed, ready to run if another attack comes.
The latest drone strike in Zaporizhzhia shows how fragile hopes for peace remain. Until the fighting truly stops, civilians will continue to suffer the most, paying a heavy price for a war they did not choose.
