Historic Demand for 2026 World Cup Tickets Exceeds 500 Million Globally

Post by : Mina Rahman

FIFA has disclosed that the 2026 World Cup has garnered an astonishing demand, with ticket requests surpassing 500 million globally. This remarkable figure emerges as the application phase for the lottery system has officially concluded.

Fans from all 211 FIFA member countries and territories sought tickets for the expanded 48-team tournament, set to occur in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Those fortunate enough to secure tickets will be notified no sooner than February 5, as FIFA commences the lottery allocation.

Global Enthusiasm for the Event

Local fans from the host nations exhibited heightened interest, yet the highest number of applications from abroad came from Germany, England, Brazil, Spain, Portugal, Argentina, and Colombia. This enthusiasm underscores the World Cup’s universal appeal.

The most sought-after match is the encounter between Colombia and Portugal in Miami on June 27, with Mexico facing South Korea in Guadalajara on June 18 following closely behind. Interest in the final match in New Jersey on July 19 is also notably high.

FIFA Acknowledges Fan Passion

FIFA President Gianni Infantino described the surge in requests as unprecedented: “Half a billion ticket requests within a month signifies more than just demand – it’s a global landmark.” He expressed gratitude to fans globally while recognizing the challenge posed by limited stadium capacity.

“Our greatest regret is that we cannot accommodate every supporter inside the stadiums,” he mentioned, illustrating the challenges presented by such extraordinary demand.

Ticket Pricing Controversy

Amidst this overwhelming interest, FIFA has faced backlash regarding ticket pricing. Many supporters have termed the costs as “prohibitive” and unaffordable for the average fan. Observers pointed out that prices for the 2026 event are nearly five times higher than those for the 2022 tournament.

To mitigate these concerns, FIFA announced a new category of discounted tickets in December, offering seats for $60 (about €51). This initiative aims to make the tournament more accessible to a wider range of fans.

Anticipation for a Landmark Tournament

The 2026 World Cup is poised to be one of the most significant and widely attended football events in history. Despite ongoing discussions about ticket pricing, the unprecedented number of applications illustrates that fans worldwide are eager to experience this spectacle in person.
