In a surprising turn of events, Real Madrid endured a painful exit from the Copa del Rey, losing 3-2 to second-division team Albacete in the round of 16 on Wednesday. This marked a disastrous debut for newly appointed head coach Alvaro Arbeloa, who replaced Xabi Alonso just two days prior after a disappointing showing against Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup final.
The match ended in dramatic fashion at the Carlos Belmonte stadium, where Albacete secured their historic win with a last-minute goal. Despite being recognized as one of Europe’s elite clubs, Real Madrid struggled against a team currently sitting 17th in Spain’s second tier.
Madrid’s performance was hindered by several key absentees, leaving them unable to assert dominance throughout the match. The playing conditions were far from ideal, as thick fog rolled in just after kickoff, reflecting Madrid’s lack of composure on the pitch. Both teams found it difficult to generate early opportunities, with Vinicius Junior's long-range attempt flying off target, leading to a lackluster first half for the visitors.
The first major breakthrough came in the 42nd minute when Albacete's Javi Villar capitalized on a corner, heading the ball past goalkeeper Andriy Lunin. This energized the home crowd and unveiledMadrid’s defensive frailties. However, just before halftime, Madrid equalized when young midfielder Franco Mastantuono reacted swiftly to a set piece, scoring from close range.
In the second half, Albacete played with increased confidence, putting pressure on Madrid and breaking their rhythm. The underdogs took the lead again in the 82nd minute through Jefte Betancor, whose shot from a clearance found the back of the net in a surprising turn of events.
Madrid seemed to have salvaged a draw with a well-placed header by Gonzalo Garcia in the 91st minute, yet Albacete had other plans. Deep into stoppage time, Jefte struck again, finishing with a brilliant lofted shot over Lunin to secure a 3-2 win, igniting wild celebrations as Albacete achieved their first-ever victory against Real Madrid.
Post-match, Arbeloa accepted total responsibility for the defeat, emphasizing that such losses are unacceptable for a club of Real Madrid's stature, especially against lower-division teams. He defended his decision to rest key players like Kylian Mbappe and Jude Bellingham in anticipation of their upcoming league match against Levante.
“I would do the same again,” Arbeloa asserted, standing by his chosen lineup. Dani Carvajal, team captain, later provided an apology to the fans, admitting the squad is currently enduring a tough patch and called for greater effort and dedication from the players.
In other Copa del Rey matches, Real Betis triumphed over Elche 2-1 to advance to the quarterfinals, while Alaves claimed a 2-0 victory against Rayo Vallecano. Meanwhile, defending champions Barcelona are set to face Racing Santander, who lead the second division, in their own last-16 tie on Thursday.
Moving forward, Real Madrid must now concentrate on La Liga, where Arbeloa knows he faces immediate pressure to rectify the team’s course following this upsetting cup exit.
