Rahul Gandhi Set to Travel to Germany Amidst BJP Critique

Post by : Mina Rahman

Rahul Gandhi, the opposition leader in the Lok Sabha, plans to fly to Berlin, Germany, between December 15 and 20, 2025, for an Indian Overseas Congress (IOC) event. This journey coincides with the ongoing Winter Session of Parliament, slated to end on December 19. The timing of his trip has attracted fierce backlash from BJP leaders, who accuse Gandhi of neglecting his parliamentary duties.

BJP representatives have mockingly dubbed Gandhi the “Leader of Paryatan” (tourism), alleging that he favors international jaunts over fulfilling his responsibilities in Parliament. Union Ministers and BJP spokespersons label him as a “part-time politician,” arguing that his foreign visits, including to Germany, showcase a lack of dedication to his role as the opposition leader. They also claim these trips are aimed more at disseminating anti-India sentiment than engaging constructively.

In light of these allegations, prominent Congress figures, including Priyanka Gandhi, have come to Rahul’s defense. Priyanka pointed out Prime Minister Narendra Modi's frequent international travels and questioned why he isn’t facing the same level of scrutiny. Congress asserts that Rahul’s trip focuses on vital global outreach and connections with the Indian diaspora, rather than mere leisure.

Gaurav Gogoi, the Deputy Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, remarked that the BJP's criticisms serve merely as distractions from serious issues raised by Gandhi in Parliament about supposed electoral inconsistencies. Congress believes that the government should address pressing domestic affairs instead of attacking opposition figures trying to engage with the diaspora.

The Indian Overseas Congress has indicated that Rahul Gandhi’s visit to Berlin represents a critical step in fortifying the party’s global presence. The gathering aims to unite Presidents and senior IOC officials from Europe to discuss challenges facing Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), strengthen the Congress Party, and further its ideology on a global stage. The IOC stresses the event’s goal of fostering impactful dialogue and collaboration with the Indian diaspora, enhancing political engagement and the party’s international network.

Ultimately, Rahul Gandhi’s journey underscores the ongoing strife between BJP and Congress about responsibilities in Parliament, international outreach, and the roles of India’s elected officials, reigniting broader discussions on their priorities.
