In a significant humanitarian effort, Qatar Charity (QC) has provided vital food baskets to thousands of families in Chad, a response aimed at alleviating the country’s escalating food insecurity crisis.
Focusing on the most impacted households around the capital, N'Djamena, this initiative has benefited approximately 14,000 individuals through the distribution of 2,000 complete food baskets.
The project was executed across four strategic locations on the outskirts of N'Djamena, with each site receiving 500 food baskets. This comprehensive strategy ensured effective outreach to the most marginalized populations across diverse areas. The food baskets included essential items intended to support families over several weeks.
This initiative was launched in collaboration with the Ministry of Social Action, Solidarity, and Humanitarian Affairs, utilizing its Department of Social Solidarity alongside local teams for effective beneficiary targeting and distribution logistics.
The timing of this intervention is critical, as the food insecurity levels in Chad are alarmingly high. The country is classified among the Sahel region's nations that face severe humanitarian challenges. The World Food Programme (WFP) estimates that millions in Chad are experiencing various degrees of food insecurity.
Chad's Global Hunger Index for 2025 categorizes hunger as “serious.” Furthermore, reports from the Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET) indicate that as many as 1.5 to 2 million individuals may require urgent food aid during the lean season from June to September when household food reserves diminish and prices surge.
This escalating food crisis has been exacerbated by frequent droughts and floods, insufficient agricultural output, widespread poverty, and the impact of regional displacement and refugee movements.
Health issues are equally alarming, with over 30% of children under five suffering from stunting caused by chronic malnutrition, underscoring a long-term systemic challenge that surpasses immediate emergency interventions.
Through this initiative, Qatar Charity aspires to assist the most vulnerable families and mitigate the adverse effects of the surging food insecurity in Chad.
