On the 78th anniversary of the Nakba, the State of Qatar has reiterated that acknowledging this historical event is vital for finding a just and enduring solution to the Palestinian conflict.
The statement was made by Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani, Qatar's Permanent Representative to the UN, during a special session of the UN Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People held in New York City.
Sheikha Alya emphasized the importance of passing General Assembly Resolution 79/82, highlighting Qatar's pride in sponsoring it. She asserted that recognizing the Nakba is an indispensable step toward achieving a fair and lasting peace for Palestinians.
Additionally, she noted that the names of Palestinian children lost in the conflict must remain engraved in memory, describing them as victims of an ongoing Nakba whose suffering requires global acknowledgment.
In her remarks, Qatar condemned various Israeli actions in the occupied territories, particularly in the West Bank, including the reclassification of Palestinian lands as Israeli “state land” and the expansion of settlements, as well as efforts to impose the death penalty law and restrictions on religious freedoms in Jerusalem.
Addressing the circumstances in Gaza, the Qatari representative called for the full execution of the ceasefire agreement and urged the opening of border crossings for the unhindered flow of humanitarian assistance into the region.
She reaffirmed Qatar's commitment to peace mediation efforts and underscored the importance of implementing UN Security Council Resolution 2803.
Further, Qatar reiterated its strong backing for the Palestinian cause and the independence of the Palestinian people, advocating the establishment of a sovereign Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
The statement also highlighted the urgent need to halt Israeli occupation and settlement expansion, cease illegal conduct in occupied territories, and uphold the right of return for Palestinian refugees under international law.
Moreover, Qatar reaffirmed its enduring political, diplomatic, and financial support for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) to sustain its humanitarian mission for Palestinian refugees.
