Qatar Advocates for Safe Maritime Navigation and Open Dialogue

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

The State of Qatar has reiterated that the principle of freedom of navigation in international waterways is essential to global law. It emphasized that engaging in serious dialogue, honoring legal frameworks, and fostering neighborly relations are pivotal for resolving international crises and mitigating their negative repercussions.

This declaration was made by Qatar's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani, during a high-level debate at the United Nations Security Council focused on ensuring the safety and protection of maritime routes.

She pointed out that the discourse is particularly timely as threats to international waterways extend beyond conventional challenges. These dangers compromise global peace, security, and economic consistency, especially in crucial corridors like the Strait of Hormuz.

Qatar reaffirmed that freedom of navigation is a key tenet of the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, citing UN Security Council Resolution 552 (1984) that calls for all nations to uphold free movement in international waters while safeguarding the territorial integrity of coastal nations.

In discussing recent escalations in the Strait of Hormuz, Qatar spotlighted the urgency of adhering to UN Security Council Resolution 2817. This resolution, tabled by Bahrain on behalf of GCC member states and Jordan, condemned assaults targeting Qatar and other neighbors, labeling them as breaches of international law and threats to global tranquility.

The resolution also cautioned against any efforts to obstruct navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, stating such actions pose significant risks to international trade and security.

Qatar further underscored the need to uphold maritime route safety and shield global supply chains in accordance with international laws. Additionally, it lauded mediation efforts from Pakistan, which contributed to a ceasefire between the United States and Iran. Qatar highlighted the importance of fully honoring this ceasefire to cultivate a peaceful atmosphere for dialogue and ensure secure passage in vital waterways.

In closing, Qatar reaffirmed its robust support for diplomatic resolutions and peaceful initiatives. It insisted that dialogue, adherence to international law, and collaborative approaches among nations are fundamental to sustaining global stability and maritime security.
