Brock Purdy made a triumphant return to the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday after missing six games due to a toe injury. His on-field performance was nothing short of stellar, leading the 49ers to a convincing 41-22 victory against the Arizona Cardinals. Purdy displayed poise throughout, completing 19 of 26 passes for 200 yards and throwing three touchdown passes as the 49ers improved to a 7-4 season record, solidifying their playoff aspirations.
The 49ers struck first, with running back Christian McCaffrey scoring a 1-yard touchdown on the first play after Skyy Moore's impressive 98-yard kickoff return. This early momentum set the tone, and shortly thereafter, the 49ers' defense forced an Arizona punt, giving Purdy his first opportunity to shine.
On the following drive, Purdy wasted no time shaking off the rust, connecting with receivers Jauan Jennings and Demarcus Robinson before throwing a flashy 30-yard touchdown to George Kittle, who was wide open on the sideline. Even though the extra point attempt was blocked, the 49ers held a comfortable early lead.
The second quarter saw Purdy continue to impress, completing a 9-yard touchdown pass to McCaffrey, marking his second touchdown of the day. By halftime, the 49ers controlled the game with a 25-10 advantage, thanks to two field goals and solid defensive play that stifled any Cardinal comeback.
As the game progressed, Purdy connected with Kittle again on a short pass that marked Kittle's 50th career touchdown, further energizing the crowd and extending the 49ers' lead beyond the Cardinals' reach.
Despite two touchdowns from Arizona in the fourth quarter, the 49ers quickly responded with McCaffrey's 20-yard run followed by another touchdown, concluding a spectacular performance for the running back.
Cardinals QB Jacoby Brissett had an impressive game, completing 47 of 57 passes for 452 yards and two touchdowns, setting an NFL record for completions, but ultimately, the Cardinals fell to 3-7. Even with strong performances from players like Bam Knight and Michael Wilson, it wasn't enough to match the 49ers’ well-rounded strengths.
Purdy's recovery from a toe injury has been a long road since the season's start. After worsening the injury in a Week 4 loss to Jacksonville, he missed eight games. However, head coach Kyle Shanahan decisively reinstated Purdy as the starter once he was fit.
Looking ahead, the 49ers face a manageable stretch against the Carolina Panthers, Cleveland Browns, and Tennessee Titans, along with a bye week. If Purdy maintains his current form, the 49ers are in a prime position to contend in the competitive NFC West as the season progresses.
