The highly anticipated film Thalaivar 173, produced by Kamal Haasan’s Raaj Kamal Films International, faces a significant change as director Sundar C steps down from the project.
With Sundar C leaving, speculation abounds in the industry regarding the fate of the movie. Reports indicate that Dhanush could possibly seize the directorial reins, though no confirmation has been forthcoming from the filmmakers. This film is noteworthy as it marks a collaboration between two of Tamil cinema’s most revered figures, with Kamal Haasan producing for Rajinikanth after many years, increasing curiosity around the project.
Sundar C cited “unforeseen and unavoidable circumstances” as the reason for his departure. Reflecting on his decision, he stated, “There are moments in our lives when we must take an unexpected turn. My connection with these two icons (Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan) has been long-lasting, and I deeply respect them.”
Kamal Haasan commented on the situation, saying, “Sundar C has made his reasons clear in a press release, and I have no further comments. My responsibility as a producer is ensuring that the script aligns with Rajinikanth’s visions. We are committed to finding a worthy script that meets his expectations.”
He also indicated the potential of bringing in a younger director, hinting at an intriguing creative approach with the phrase: “prepare for surprises.”
Thalaivar 173 is significant not just for the reunion of Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan after 46 years, but also for the unique convergence of these two legends in a landmark project. The film was officially revealed at the NEXA SIIMA Awards 2025, building excitement among devotees. Sundar C’s past collaborations with the stars only add to the project’s historical significance: he previously directed Rajinikanth in Arunachalam (1997) and Kamal Haasan in Anbe Sivam (2003). The industry is now keenly watching to see who will take charge of this eagerly awaited project.
As discussions continue with Dhanush, fans are on the edge of their seats, waiting for an official announcement regarding the new director, hoping for swift progress on the script and production timeline.
