At a recent Academy event, director Alejandro González Iñárritu, who collaborated with Tom Cruise on an upcoming film slated for October, took the stage to honor the actor. Iñárritu commended Cruise's skill, stating, "It's not about how far he runs or how high he leaps, it's those precise movements he makes, those subtle adjustments."
At 63, and a four-time nominee without a win, Cruise was presented with an Honorary Oscar recognizing his significant impact on the film industry, spanning from Risky Business through the Top Gun series and the Mission: Impossible franchise. This accolade also acknowledged his role in advocating for cinema amid the rise of streaming platforms and social media.
During his acceptance speech, Cruise reminisced about how films expanded his childhood horizons, saying, "Suddenly the world was so much larger than what I knew." He shared his journey of taking various jobs just to buy movie tickets, reiterating his lifelong passion for cinema: "I will continuously strive to uplift this art form, support emerging talents, and safeguard cinema's essence—hopefully without too many more injuries." He humorously noted his ankle injury from a 2017 stunt.
Cruise asserted, "Filmmaking is not merely what I do; it embodies who I am."
The gala also recognized Dolly Parton with the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award for her philanthropic efforts, notably starting a library that has donated over 300 million books to youngsters. Parton delivered her acceptance speech through video.
Additional honors were given to actress and choreographer Debbie Allen and production designer Wynn Thomas.
