In a tense clash at the San Siro, AC Milan edged out Inter Milan with a narrow 1-0 victory on Sunday. The match was defined by Christian Pulisic’s pivotal goal and an impressive penalty save from goalkeeper Mike Maignan, which proved vital for the team's aspirations for the Serie A Scudetto. This win elevates AC Milan to second place in the league standings, whereas Inter now sits fourth.
Before the derby, Inter was riding high on a three-match winning streak, eager to reclaim the league's top position. However, AS Roma's earlier 3-1 win against Cremonese had set the pace, making every point crucial in this competitive title race. As it stands, Milan is on 25 points, trailing Roma by two and tied with Napoli, while Inter and Bologna are at 24 points.
The first half was dominated by Inter, who created numerous scoring opportunities. Maignan showcased his skills with several crucial saves, including a stunning one-handed stop against Marcus Thuram and a header from Francesco Acerbi that hit the post. Lautaro Martinez also tested Maignan, but the Milan custodian held firm to keep his side in the game, with Pulisic coming close as he curled a shot just wide.
The decisive goal came soon after the second half commenced. Milan executed a swift counter-attack, with Youssouf Fofana finding Alexis Saelemaekers. After Saelemaekers' low shot was deflected by Inter’s Yann Sommer, Pulisic was quick to react, slotting home the rebound to give Milan a crucial lead.
Milan continued to press for more goals, with Rafael Leao nearly converting a cross and Fofana's attempt again saved by Sommer. Inter's attempts to find an equalizer were bolstered by a penalty awarded after a foul by Strahinja Pavlovic. Hakan Calhanoglu stepped up to take the spot-kick, but Maignan’s brilliant positioning allowed him to read the shot perfectly, saving it cleanly.
As the match progressed, Inter maintained possession, but Milan's defense remained resolute, effectively absorbing the pressure. This victory marks AC Milan's sixth consecutive derby win over Inter, further consolidating their local superiority. Milan displays their tactical prowess, quick counter-attacks, and goalkeeper brilliance, all essential for their title challenge in Serie A.
Fans and analysts applauded Milan’s composure and efficiency, particularly their ability to convert one clear opportunity while holding firm under late-game pressure. This derby win not only provides Milan with significant bragging rights in the city but also reinvigorates their title pursuit, keeping the contention for the Scudetto alive.
