In a stunning display, Lionel Messi led Inter Miami to a decisive 4-0 triumph against FC Cincinnati on Sunday, moving closer to their inaugural MLS Cup final. The Argentine superstar netted one goal and assisted three others, while Tadeo Allende scored twice and Mateo Silvetti contributed with another goal. This victory sets the stage for a showdown with New York City FC next Saturday in the Eastern Conference final.
New York City FC earned their spot after defeating the top-seeded Philadelphia Union with a 1-0 result, thanks to Maxi Moralez's goal in the 27th minute. Entering the match as the third seed, Miami demonstrated confidence, overpowering the second-seeded Cincinnati team with their exceptional skills and precise passing.
Miami's head coach, Javier Mascherano, lauded Messi and his players for their nearly flawless outing. “The team displayed remarkable resilience and executed a superb match. It's a privilege to coach Leo and this talented group,” he stated. “We recognize Messi's impact with and without the ball, and today, he showcased it all yet again.”
A full-capacity TQL Stadium watched as Cincinnati struggled to capitalize on early opportunities. Kevin Denkey tested Miami goalkeeper Rocco Rios Novo shortly after kickoff, but it was Miami who notched the first goal. Messi delivered a pinpoint pass to Silvetti, who crossed into the box, allowing Messi to tap in a header for the opener.
Cincinnati almost leveled the score in the 22nd minute, but Ender Echenique's shot veered off target. After that miss, Miami seized control, with Messi just missing another chance to extend the lead in the 27th minute. The second goal came in the 57th minute when Messi set up Silvetti for a spectacular curled shot into the net.
As Cincinnati pressed forward, defensive weaknesses were exploited by Miami, with Messi continuing to lead the charge. In the 62nd minute, he assisted Allende for the third goal, and then again in the 74th minute, he found Allende for the fourth, showcasing a brilliant display of teamwork and vision.
With this victory, Inter Miami moves a significant step closer to the MLS Cup final slated for December 6. The champions from the Eastern and Western Conferences will clash for the title. In the West, Vancouver is set to play against the winner of Monday's match between San Diego and Minnesota United.
Messi's performance reaffirmed his status as one of the game's greats, expertly controlling the tempo, creating chances, and showcasing leadership on the field. Fans of Inter Miami are now waiting in anticipation for the Eastern final, hoping that Messi's brilliance can lead them to their first-ever MLS championship.
