Manager Ruben Amorim of Manchester United has discussed the potential January transfers of Kobbie Mainoo and Joshua Zirkzee. He recognizes their craving for increased playing time but maintains that the club's needs must take precedence.
Both players have found themselves with minimal playing time this season; Zirkzee, the Dutch forward, has managed just 82 minutes in the Premier League, while England's Mainoo has recorded a mere 138 minutes since the season commenced. With neither having started a league match, their chances of catching the eye of their national team coaches have dwindled.
Reports suggest that both players are contemplating moves during the January transfer window. They aim for regular playing time leading up to the 2026 World Cup, set to take place from June 11 to July 19 in North America. The proximity of this global event heightens their urgency for a transfer.
Ahead of Manchester United’s match against Everton, Amorim empathized with the players' frustrations, stating, “I was a player myself. I understand their feelings and want to assist them in any way I can.” He acknowledged the significance of the World Cup and the players' dreams.
Nonetheless, he underscored the priority of the club. “Manchester United comes first. My aim is to support both the club and the players; if that becomes difficult, I must prioritize the team.”
Despite the limited chances, there may be more opportunities for both Mainoo and Zirkzee in the near future. With Benjamin Sesko injured and Bryan Mbeumo and Amad Diallo expected to depart for the Africa Cup of Nations, they might find themselves receiving more playing time.
Amorim's remarks reflect a balance between respecting the players’ aspirations and considering the club's requirements. He stressed that the collective performance and results take precedence over individual requests, while still supporting their personal ambitions.
As they are both young talents, consistent playing time is vital for their development. A January move could facilitate reinstatement in their national teams, yet Amorim’s statements highlight that such decisions will be made with careful consideration of club commitments and ambitions.
Fans of Manchester United will undoubtedly be keenly observing if the two players will experience enhanced playing opportunities in the league and other matches, especially as the January transfer window approaches, although Amorim's insights indicate that any moves will align with the club's broader objectives.
