Puducherry and Tamil Nadu Schools Shut Due to Heavy Rain Forecast

Post by : Raina Nasser

On November 18, 2025, educational institutions in Puducherry and Karaikal were ordered to close in light of expected heavy rainfall in the Union Territory. In Tamil Nadu, areas like Cuddalore and Villupuram also suspended classes following light to moderate rainfall recorded on November 17, 2025. This weather is attributed to ongoing systems causing rain over the Bay of Bengal and nearby Sri Lanka, ending a dry phase and revitalizing the Northeast monsoon.

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has issued yellow alerts across eight southern districts of Tamil Nadu, including Tirunelveli, Virudhunagar, Tenkasi, and Theni, indicating the importance of taking necessary precautions. Experts explained that while the existing low-pressure area in the southwest Bay of Bengal is not expected to escalate significantly, a secondary low-pressure system developing later this week may bring sustained heavy rains to the region.

RMC officials have indicated that heavy downpours may remain focused in Mayiladuthurai and Cuddalore districts between November 19 and 20, with intensity projected to rise from November 22 as the second low-pressure system approaches the southeast Bay of Bengal. Yellow alerts have also been issued for coastal districts from November 21 to 23.

Authorities anticipate that this fresh batch of rainfall will aid the state in meeting its seasonal rainfall goals, currently recorded at 9% below the average of 29 cm this year. Residents are urged to stay vigilant, especially in low-lying and flood-prone areas, and to heed local administrative instructions to ensure their safety.

The ongoing precipitation is expected to disrupt daily activities, transportation, and agriculture throughout southern Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. Officials are closely monitoring the weather to provide timely updates and alerts.
