The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) has released a public survey that underscores the success of its single-use plastics policy initiated in 2020, aimed at decreasing plastic reliance and enhancing sustainability.
This initiative has yielded remarkable environmental benefits. Since its inception, more than 470 million single-use plastic bags have been averted from circulation, and major retail outlets have witnessed a staggering 95 percent decrease in plastic bag usage. Additionally, around 267 million plastic bottles have been retrieved through home collection efforts and over 170 smart recycling kiosks across the emirate.
These initiatives have successfully prevented 7,386 tonnes of plastic waste from entering landfills. The environmental advantages are notable, translating into emissions reductions similar to removing 185,000 gasoline-powered vehicles from roads for an entire year.
To gauge public perception and response, the EAD engaged over 5,000 participants across 126 nationalities in their survey. The results revealed an impressive level of awareness and backing from the public. Approximately 96 percent of respondents acknowledged the environmental dangers posed by plastics, while the same percentage confirmed their dedication to minimizing plastic use through straightforward daily practices.
Health education has also surged, with 95 percent of participants recognizing the associated health hazards of plastic products. Furthermore, 89 percent voiced their satisfaction with EAD's informative campaigns, commending their clarity and efficacy.
The survey also emphasized public endorsement for sustainable options. Roughly 89 percent believe that eco-friendly bag pricing is fair, with 88 percent in favor of deploying collected fees towards environmental preservation initiatives. Moreover, 95 percent affirmed that existing policies and regulations are effective, demonstrating a robust trust in the agency's interventions.
EAD noted that these findings bolster the UAE's wider environmental objectives, particularly in light of the recent federal prohibition on single-use plastics. The results indicate a favorable change in public behavior, with 93 percent of participants reporting overall contentment with the survey.
The agency stressed that ongoing community engagement and involvement are essential for advancing sustainability efforts and curtailing plastic pollution throughout the UAE.
