PSLV-C62 Mission Declares Failure, Yet KID Capsule Delivers Data from Space

Post by : Mina Rahman

Accomplishing extraordinary feats often demands a child's tenacity and relentless spirit. The KID capsule, a small payload aboard the PSLV-C62 mission, embodied this essence of perseverance.

Although the PSLV mission met with failure, leading to the assumption that all onboard satellites—including a vital surveillance satellite—were lost, the KID capsule astonished everyone by successfully detaching from the rocket and relaying crucial data back to Earth.

This milestone is particularly noteworthy for the company behind KID, which aims to enhance space travel and cargo return efficiency. Their objective is to build capsules that can securely transport cargo from space to Earth, enduring the severe heat and pressure of re-entering the atmosphere.

KID functioned as a technology demonstrator and prototype for its upcoming vehicle, intended to carry payloads up to 120 kilograms safely from orbit back to Earth's surface.

The PSLV-C62 rocket started its journey seamlessly from the launch site; however, issues emerged during the third stage of the flight. Unexpected anomalies and deviations from the correct trajectory were observed while the rocket's strap-on motors were engaged, leading to the mission's failure and the loss of a significant portion of the payload.

Among the satellites that went missing was a crucial earth observation satellite designated to enhance defense capabilities by tracking enemy movements and troop activities. Additionally, the payload comprised a specialized tanker satellite, assets from private firms, and various projects from students.

Even in the face of the mission's disappointment, the KID capsule's successful detachment and data transmission present an optimistic outlook for future space missions and cargo retrieval initiatives.
