Saskatchewan's Deficit Projected to Exceed $1.4B as SaskPower Requests Additional Funds

Post by : Mina Rahman

The Saskatchewan government is poised to exceed its budget by more than $1 billion, a decision set to significantly amplify the province's deficit.

During a recent committee session, it was disclosed that SaskPower is seeking an extra $813 million to manage its rising expenses, in addition to $194 million for uncollected carbon price fuel charges.

Opposition members have voiced strong disapproval of Premier Scott Moe's administration for sidestepping inquiries, particularly noting the absence of Crown Investments Minister Jeremy Harrison during the critical meeting.

NDP critic Aleana Young highlighted the historic financial losses faced by SaskPower, warning that households might be subjected to increased electricity rates. Finance critic Trent Wotherspoon labeled the situation as “reckless,” accusing the government of evading accountability.

Earlier projections indicated a $12-million surplus, while the mid-year forecast now estimates a $427-million deficit. Should these anticipated expenses be approved, Young warns that the deficit could soar to at least $1.4 billion.

Government representatives clarified that ministers are not mandated to be present at committee discussions, yet the Opposition pointed out that no billion-dollar request was submitted during a similar meeting in 2022.

As of now, SaskPower has refrained from making any public remarks regarding the potential implications, including the likelihood of rate hikes.
