Heritage Hubs: Private Museums in Northern Borders of Saudi Arabia

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

On this International Museum Day, the spotlight shines on private museums in Saudi Arabia's Northern Borders Region for their unwavering commitment to preserving the local cultural and historical heritage. These museums serve as a haven for visitors, historians, and folklore enthusiasts eager to discover rare artifacts, archival documents, historical photographs, and traditional tools that narrate the area’s rich history.

A prominent figure in heritage collection is Zahiah Al-Anazi, who has converted a segment of her residence into a private museum. This unique space exhibits a variety of traditional items, featuring a classic bridal chamber, northern Saudi costumes, copper kitchenware, and examples of Sadu weaving, one of the oldest crafts in the region.

Furthermore, the Northern Borders Region highlights the history of the Tapline project, a significant development in the area’s modern narrative. This pipeline linked oil fields in eastern Saudi Arabia to the Lebanese port city of Sidon from 1950 until oil operations concluded in 1990, playing a pivotal role in the region’s socio-economic progress and leaving a profound influence on local communities.

Continued efforts by private museums are instrumental in defending Saudi heritage, ensuring that traditional culture and historical memories are preserved for generations to come.
