The Duke of Sussex has made a sincere apology to Canada following his decision to wear a Los Angeles Dodgers hat during Game 4 of the World Series against the Toronto Blue Jays. Prince Harry lightheartedly explained he was "under duress" when he chose the notable blue cap, suggesting he believed it was "the proper thing to do" after receiving an invitation from the Dodgers' owner.
Reactions from Canadian Fans
His cap choice received backlash from Canadians, who expected him to represent the only Canadian Major League Baseball team. Adding to the public scrutiny is the fact that Prince Harry’s father, King Charles, serves as Canada’s head of state, which sharpened the focus on his allegiance.
A Playful Apology
“First off, I want to apologize to Canada for wearing it,” Prince Harry remarked. “Secondly, I was indeed under duress; the options were limited.” He humorously wore a Toronto Blue Jays cap during the interview, adding, “When your hair is thinning, and you’re under strong lights, you just grab whatever hat is nearby.”
Pledging Future Support
The prince assured fans he would wear a Blue Jays cap from now on, showing his support for Toronto in forthcoming matches. The Duchess of Sussex, originally from Los Angeles, even posted a video of Prince Harry cheering for the Dodgers’ Game 7 victory.
Connecting with Canadian Veterans
During his Canada visit, Prince Harry received a Blue Jays cap while attending a Remembrance event and met with the nation’s oldest veterans. He also mentioned that declaring his support for Toronto might complicate his standing in California.
Royal Life on the West Coast
Since stepping back from royal duties in 2020, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, who previously lived in Canada while filming Suits, have settled in California. Their appearance at the Dodgers’ stadium evoked mixed feelings from US fans, with some expressing displeasure over the couple's front-row presence during an 18-inning game.
In a recent essay, Prince Harry reflected on “What it means to be British,” celebrating the culture of pub banter, sports enthusiasm, and lighthearted self-deprecation as core aspects of British identity, ahead of his visits with military veterans in Canada.
