Prabowo Confronts Obstacles in Indonesia's Free Meal Initiative

Post by : Shakul

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has revealed that the government’s ambitious free meal initiative is grappling with significant hurdles despite its widespread implementation across the nation.

During an event in East Java, Prabowo remarked that the nutritious meal scheme “is fraught with many difficulties” and admitted the complexities associated with such a broad national undertaking.

Launched in January 2025, the initiative aimed to tackle malnutrition and food scarcity faced by children and at-risk communities. By March 2026, the government asserted that it had benefited over 61 million individuals.

However, the program has drawn criticism following reports of illness linked to hygiene issues from the meals distributed. Critics and advocacy groups have called for enhanced oversight and a temporary halt to the initiative in certain locations.

Financial strains also beset the initiative, as Indonesia reduced the meal distribution frequency from six days to five weekly in a bid to conserve around 40 trillion rupiah due to economic challenges stemming from the conflict in the Middle East.

Defending the scheme, Prabowo noted that numerous ordinary citizens, farmers, and families appealed to the government not to discontinue the free meal program, underscoring its role in ensuring children received essential nutrition.

Meanwhile, Indonesia Corruption Watch lodged a complaint regarding alleged irregularities associated with halal certification procurement and the program’s budget, claiming discrepancies nearing 50 million dollars.

Prabowo cautioned that anyone abusing authority or breaching guidelines within the project would confront stringent disciplinary measures and removal from their position.

Indonesia continues to wrestle with issues of child malnutrition and stunting, with over 20 percent of children reportedly suffering from long-standing nutritional deficiencies.
