Significant Reduction in Indonesia's Forest Fires

Post by : Shakul

Indonesia has announced a significant achievement in curbing forest and land fires, with Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni revealing an impressive 86 percent decrease in fire incidents over the last ten years.

During the 21st session of the United Nations Forum on Forests held at the UN headquarters in New York City, the minister highlighted the nation’s improved prevention systems and monitoring efforts as key factors in reaching this milestone.

Raja Juli Antoni pointed out that the government has deployed integrated early warning systems, imposed stricter law enforcement, and initiated community-driven fire prevention programs in areas particularly vulnerable to wildfires.

This achievement is part of a broader climate action framework led by President Prabowo Subianto, which prioritizes sustainable forest conservation and responsible environmental management.

Furthermore, the minister noted a noteworthy drop in fires during the 2024-2025 timeframe, credited to swifter emergency response mechanisms and enhanced monitoring of potential hotspots by coordinated field teams.

However, he cautioned that climate threats persist this year, as forecasts indicate a potential return of the El Nino phenomenon with low to moderate intensity beginning in June.

He emphasized that an extended dry season could elevate the chances of new fires, necessitating heightened readiness and vigilance nationwide.

Indonesia has endured severe forest fire challenges in the past, causing haze pollution that impacts neighboring nations and resulting in environmental and economic repercussions throughout Southeast Asia.
