Portugal's Foreign Minister, Paulo Rangel, announced the country's formal recognition of the State of Palestine. This decision aligns with Portugal's long-standing foreign policy principles and reaffirms its commitment to a two-state solution as the only viable path to a just and lasting peace in the Middle East.
Minister Rangel emphasized the urgency of an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, condemning the ongoing humanitarian crisis, including widespread starvation and destruction. He also criticized the expansion of Israeli settlements in the West Bank, calling for the cessation of such activities. Furthermore, Rangel stated that Hamas should not have any form of control in Gaza or elsewhere and demanded the release of all hostages.
Portugal's recognition of Palestine comes in coordination with Britain, Canada, and Australia. This collective move reflects a growing international consensus among Western nations regarding Palestinian statehood. The recognition is seen as a significant step toward reinvigorating efforts for a two-state solution, despite ongoing challenges in the region.
This development is expected to have significant implications for international relations, particularly concerning Portugal's diplomatic ties with Israel and other Middle Eastern countries. While some nations view this recognition as a positive step toward peace, others, including Israel, have expressed concerns about the potential impact on the peace process.
