Lungu's Burial Dispute Reveals Political Tensions in Zambia

Post by : Shakul

Nearly ten months have passed since Edgar Lungu's death, yet his body remains unburied, caught in a contentious dispute between his family and the Zambian government. This extraordinary situation has garnered attention in both South Africa and Zambia.

Lungu, who passed away in June last year at the age of 68 in Pretoria, has seen his family advocating for his burial in South Africa, while the Zambian government insists on a state burial at home.

Underlying this disagreement is a deep-seated political rivalry with current President Hakainde Hichilema. Lungu’s family claims he wished for Hichilema to stay away from his funeral, prompting their opposition to a state ceremony in Zambia.

In contrast, the government argues that a state funeral is critical to honor a former head of state. They sought legal measures to gain custody of the body and even prepared a burial site in Zambia, now untouched as the legal struggle persists.

The situation escalated when authorities briefly seized control of the remains with assistance from South African officials. However, a court later mandated their return to the funeral home, ruling the action violated legal protocols.

Prior court decisions had favored the government’s plea to repatriate Lungu's body, setting a tentative transfer date. Recent developments, however, have introduced further legal complexities, potentially leading to new court challenges.

This case serves as a stark reminder of how political dynamics can linger even posthumously, raising pressing questions about legal jurisdiction, family wishes, and the state's role in managing the remains of national figures.
