Under the mesmerizing backdrop of the snow-capped Dhauladhar mountains, all eyes shifted to Rajat Patidar as he electrified the HPCA Stadium in Dharamshala. On Tuesday night, Patidar's impressive display helped steer the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) into the IPL finals for the second consecutive time.
His remarkable innings of 93 runs off just 33 deliveries were pivotal in RCB's victory against Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 1. With an outstanding strike rate of 281.82, Patidar's innings comprised five boundaries and nine towering sixes.
This win marked RCB's second successive entry into the IPL finals, enhancing their hopes of claiming back-to-back titles.
Patidar has solidified his reputation during IPL playoff matches, having accumulated 338 runs in just six innings with an impressive average of 112.66. His notable performance features one century and two half-centuries.
Among his achievements is an unbeaten 112 against Lucknow Super Giants in the 2022 Eliminator, a performance recognized as one of RCB's finest moments in IPL history.
At 32, Patidar stands out as one of the most formidable hitters in IPL playoffs, amassing 24 sixes in knockout matches. Only renowned players like Suresh Raina, MS Dhoni, and Kieron Pollard have surpassed this tally in IPL playoff history.
This season marks a career high for Patidar, who has amassed 486 runs over 13 innings, achieving an average of 44.18 and a strike rate of 196.76. His tally includes five fifties, with his highest score being an impressive 93 not out along with a remarkable 41 sixes and 29 fours.
After the match, Patidar credited his teammates for embracing an aggressive playing style.
“It was a fantastic match for us. The batsmen played with a positive attitude, which was our key to success,” he stated.
He elaborated on the team's pre-match discussions, emphasizing the goal to maintain confidence and begin the game with an attacking mindset.
“We discussed the importance of strong body language and an aggressive strategy, especially for such a crucial game. Our dominance throughout was impressive,” Patidar noted.
Regarding his batting technique, Patidar shared his approach of gauging the pitch before launching his offensive.
“I often take my time, around 8-10 balls, to get accustomed to the wicket before pressuring the bowlers,” he explained.
GT's Glenn Phillips recognized Patidar's prowess and described him as a formidable opponent when he’s in form.
“He is an excellent player. Once he finds his rhythm, he’s extremely hard to contain. His awareness of his strengths and unwavering confidence are remarkable,” Phillips remarked.
As RCB heads toward the IPL final, they aim to maintain their victorious streak. Notably, the winner of Qualifier 1 has claimed the IPL trophy 12 out of 15 times, further boosting Patidar and his team's confidence for the final.
