Palestinian Foreign Minister Varsen Aghabekian Shahin hailed the recent recognition of a Palestinian state by the UK, Canada, and Australia. She described the move as a “point of no return” that strengthens Palestinian aspirations for independence and sovereignty.
Shahin emphasized that the decision of these countries helps preserve the vision of a two-state solution, which many fear has been fading due to ongoing conflict, settlement expansion, and humanitarian crises. “Recognition is not symbolic,” she said. “It is a tangible and practical step toward peace.”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu dismissed the move, calling Palestinian statehood “impossible” under current conditions. Israeli officials argue that such recognition rewards violence and undermines security. Shahin rejected those claims, stressing that recognition is about justice and coexistence, not about rewarding extremism.
The recognitions come at a time of deep humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where months of war have displaced thousands and created severe shortages of food, water, and medical care. Shahin said these conditions only highlight the urgency of international recognition and support for Palestinian rights.
Shahin urged other nations to follow the lead of the UK, Canada, and Australia. “This is not the end of the journey,” she said. “Recognition must continue until Palestine stands fully independent and sovereign.”
More countries are expected to make similar announcements during the United Nations General Assembly sessions this week. For Palestinians, these moves are being viewed as historic milestones that bring them closer to long-awaited statehood.
