OpenAI Partners With Apple Supplier to Build New AI-Native Device

OpenAI is stepping beyond software with plans to create its own AI-hardware. The company has teamed up with Luxshare, a major supplier for Apple devices, to build a consumer gadget that can process intelligence in more intuitive ways. The device is still in prototype stage, but is said to be “pocket-sized” and context-aware, designed to work closely with OpenAI’s models.

This move follows OpenAI’s acquisition earlier this year of io Products, a startup founded by former Apple designer Jony Ive. That deal underlines the company’s intention to design and produce hardware that is built from the ground up for AI, rather than relying entirely on existing phones and computers.

Luxshare brings in large-scale manufacturing strength, having built many Apple iPhones and AirPods. In addition, OpenAI is reportedly in talks with Goertek, another hardware component supplier, to provide parts like speaker modules for the upcoming device.

Analysts see this project as a major step. If successful, such a device could challenge the dominance of current smartphones and traditional computing platforms, offering a more seamless and native AI experience. It reflects a growing trend where AI companies are exploring not only the software side but also hardware design to better meet performance, integration, and user experience goals.

OpenAI’s hardware push reflects its broader vision: to build completely integrated devices that sense context, reduce friction, and offer new interface possibilities. While many details remain under wraps—such as precise functions, pricing, or launch date—this partnership signals the start of hardware becoming front and center in how people might experience AI in everyday life.
