Oman and South Korea Forge MoU for Enhanced Green Collaboration

Post by : Mara Rahim

The Sultanate of Oman and the Republic of Korea have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at bolstering bilateral relations and enhancing collaboration in areas concerning the environment, climate change, and sustainable development. This agreement was formalized during the Seventh United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-7) taking place in Nairobi, Kenya.

With a focus on establishing a robust long-term partnership anchored in equality and mutual interests, the MoU emphasizes the importance of environmental protection for the benefit of both current and future generations. It promotes collaborative measures at bilateral and international levels to tackle escalating global environmental issues, showcasing the commitment of Oman and South Korea toward a collaborative environmental framework.

Dr. Abdullah bin Ali Al Amri, Chairman of the Environment Authority, represented Oman, while Kum Hanseung, Vice Minister of Climate, Energy, and Environment, represented Korea.

Areas of focus for this collaboration include air quality management, water resource conservation, pollution control, biodiversity preservation, combatting desertification, advancing the circular economy and waste management, developing climate change mitigation solutions such as carbon reduction technologies, and fostering the transition to a green economy through initiatives like hydrogen production and green buildings.

The MoU outlines specific practical steps for cooperation, including the exchange of information and experts, staff training initiatives, the development of joint projects, and the organization of seminars and workshops. These activities are anticipated to enhance knowledge sharing and technical expertise between the nations, thereby supporting sustainable growth and environmental resilience.
