Russian Strikes Trigger Widespread Power Outages in Ukraine’s Odesa Region

Post by : Saif Nasser

Ukraine’s southern port city of Odesa and nearby areas were hit by major power outages on Saturday after a large overnight Russian attack damaged the country’s energy system. The strikes affected power supplies across several regions, leaving thousands of families without electricity.

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said Russia launched more than 450 drones and around 30 missiles during the attack. He explained that the main target was Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, especially in the south and in the Odesa region. According to him, at least seven regions across the country were impacted by the blackouts.

Ukraine’s power grid operator confirmed that a significant number of homes in Odesa and the neighboring Mykolaiv region lost electricity. The operator also said that the Ukrainian-controlled parts of the frontline Kherson region were completely without power after the strikes.

Russia has repeatedly attacked Ukraine’s energy system since its full-scale invasion began in 2022. These attacks have often caused daily power cuts lasting several hours, especially during colder months when electricity is needed for heating and basic services.

For residents in Odesa, the blackout added to the daily hardships of living under constant threat. Homes, hospitals, schools, and businesses were all affected. Emergency services and power engineers were deployed quickly to assess the damage and begin repairs, though restoring full power may take time.

Ukrainian officials say the continued targeting of power plants, substations, and transmission lines is meant to weaken civilian life and put pressure on the country during the war. Despite these challenges, authorities have worked to strengthen the energy system and improve air defense to limit the damage from future attacks.

The latest assault once again highlights how critical infrastructure has become a central focus of the conflict. As winter approaches, concerns are growing about how repeated strikes on the power grid will affect ordinary people across Ukraine.
