New Glenn Rocket Launch Faces Satellite Orbit Challenge

New Glenn Rocket Launch Faces Satellite Orbit Challenge

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

Blue Origin achieved a noteworthy milestone on Sunday with the launch of its third New Glenn rocket, managing to successfully re-fly and recover a previously utilized first-stage booster.

However, the mission encountered a significant issue when the rocket’s second stage failed to place its payload in the intended orbit. The payload, known as BlueBird 7, was developed by AST SpaceMobile, a company based in Texas that specializes in direct-to-cellphone communication satellites.

AST SpaceMobile revealed that the satellite was released into an orbit lower than planned. Although it separated from the rocket and initiated its systems effectively, its onboard propulsion lacks the capability to adjust its orbit to reach the required altitude.

Consequently, AST SpaceMobile confirmed that the satellite will not be able to function under these circumstances, and it is expected that BlueBird 7 will ultimately deorbit and disintegrate upon reentry into the Earth's atmosphere.

The successful recovery of the rocket’s first stage is undoubtedly a positive development for Blue Origin’s advancements in reusable launch technology; however, the satellite's orbital failure underscores persistent challenges in ensuring precision in space missions.
