Netanyahu Postpones India Trip Amid Delhi Blast Concerns

Post by : Raina Nasser

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has once again decided to postpone his upcoming trip to India, initially planned for later this year. The visit, which was to involve discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has been delayed due to growing security concerns triggered by a recent catastrophic explosion in New Delhi.

The explosion, occurring two weeks ago, stands as the city’s deadliest attack in over a decade, claiming the lives of at least 15 individuals and injuring many more. Both nations' security agencies have been vigilantly overseeing the situation since then.

Reports indicate that Israeli officials have recommended postponing the trip pending a new security assessment. Netanyahu is now expected to seek an alternative date next year, contingent on the evolving scenario.

This represents the third cancellation this year for Netanyahu relative to his India plans. Earlier, a planned one-day visit was called off on September 9 due to ongoing elections in Israel. A similar withdrawal occurred before the April elections, again for political considerations.

The prime minister's visit was intended to underscore his robust connections with global leaders. Recently, posters featuring him alongside Modi, US President, and Russia’s President were displayed in Israel to bolster his political image domestically. His campaign frequently emphasizes his standing as a leader with significant international sway, particularly regarding national security issues.

Netanyahu last visited India in January 2018, while PM Modi made a groundbreaking trip to Israel back in 2017—the first-ever by an Indian prime minister. The rapport between the two leaders is often showcased in media from both nations.

At this point, officials are awaiting improved conditions and a more secure environment before finalizing any new travel arrangements.
