Nepal’s Prime Minister, Sushila Karki, has enhanced her interim cabinet, marking a transformative moment in the wake of last month’s destructive protests that rattled the nation. These demonstrations, propelled by the youth's desire for change, resulted in over 73 fatalities and the ousting of the previous administration. Karki, at 73, a former chief justice, has taken the helm to guide the country towards stability and necessary reforms.
On Sunday, President Ram Chandra Paudel officially swore in two new ministers — Bablu Gupta, a 28-year-old influential youth activist, and Dr. Sudha Sharma, a recognized health professional and author. This cabinet growth demonstrates Karki’s dedication to incorporating youthful perspectives and expert opinions into governance.
Gupta, who leads the volunteer initiative 100’s Group, is celebrated for his community outreach focusing on food security and education for marginalized groups. His selection as the Youth and Sports Minister has been warmly embraced, particularly among the youth who spearheaded the protests last month.
Dr. Sudha Sharma, taking the role of Minister of Health and Population, comes with extensive experience in public health and maternal care. Her influence in policy innovation and advocacy for accessible healthcare has established her as a trusted figure in this sector.
Officials indicate that Karki has suggested two additional candidates for her cabinet of ten, but their appointments are currently pending discussions with youth representatives. A source from the presidential office disclosed that negotiations are still in progress to finalize the complete cabinet.
As Karki assumes her position after a period of violence, she faces the monumental challenge of mending a fractured nation, rebuilding confidence in leadership, and preparing for national elections set for March 5. Her commitment to “clean governance and unity” has struck a chord with citizens yearning for a shift from years of political unrest.
The inclusion of Gupta and Sharma into Nepal's transitional government has ignited hope throughout the country. For many, this represents the dawn of a generational shift toward a transparent and inclusive political landscape.
