Widespread Protests Erupt in Nepal Over New Customs Enforcement

Post by : Shakul

Nepal is currently facing heightened unrest across its border areas and key cities following the government's stringent enforcement of customs duties on imported goods from India. This measure has incited public outrage, primarily due to the surge in prices for essential commodities and the disruption of cross-border trade.

Implemented under the leadership of Balendra Shah, who recently took office, the policy has quickly led to extensive demonstrations, particularly in border towns like Birgunj and the capital city, Kathmandu.

For years, the open border with India has facilitated the easy exchange of goods and allowed residents to access affordable essentials from Indian markets. The new customs duties, however, applied to products valued over NPR 100, have fundamentally altered this arrangement.

Residents in border regions have voiced serious concerns about the financial strain the new regulations impose. Many rely on Indian markets for groceries, medicines, and household necessities, and the duties, which range between 5% and 80%, have significantly driven up prices.

Footage from border checkpoints illustrates tense confrontations between locals and security forces. In several cases, even minor items like snack packets have been confiscated, amplifying public frustration and raising doubts about the policy's feasibility.

In defense of the decision, the government has stated that these regulations are not entirely new but have been brought to strict enforcement to safeguard revenue and bolster local businesses. Officials maintain that the excessive cross-border purchases were undermining Nepal's domestic markets and hindering tax collection.

The issue has also gained a political dimension, with both opposition factions and some from the ruling side criticizing the enforcement as unreasonable. As protests mount, there are indications of escalating demonstrations if the policy is not reassessed, showcasing intensifying tensions over economic and governance matters in the nation.
