Neena Gupta endorses salwar kameez as practical travel wear for women

Post by : Saif Nasser

Veteran Bollywood actor Neena Gupta has once again highlighted a pragmatic approach to dressing. In a recent Instagram clip, she recommended the traditional salwar kameez for women on the move, describing it as comfortable, functional and suited to travel needs.

The 66-year-old, known for her straightforward commentary and understated style, argued that the Indian suit combines elegance with practical benefits on flights and long-distance trains, particularly when hygiene and ease are priorities.

Neena Gupta’s Travel Recommendation

In the video shared on October 26, Gupta explained in Hindi why she prefers a salwar kameez when travelling. She noted that a narrower salwar cuff, or pocha, prevents the hem from brushing dirty surfaces commonly found in aircraft and railway toilets.

She advised, "Keep the salwar cuff trimmed to about twelve inches so it does not drag. In trains and planes, bathroom floors are often unclean, and a designed cuff helps stop your clothes getting wet or soiled."

Dupatta Used as a Layer

Gupta also emphasised the multifunctional value of the dupatta. When cabin or platform air feels cold, the dupatta can be wrapped as a shawl for warmth and modesty. "If you get cold, simply drape it over your shoulders; it keeps you warm and looks graceful," she said.

She suggested that the salwar kameez often outperforms casual Western options like track pants in terms of versatility, comfort and overall appearance during travel.

Practical Travel Styling Tips

Gupta recommended keeping the salwar length to the ankle to facilitate walking and avoid tripping. She noted the outfit pairs well with both traditional juttis or modern sneakers, depending on the traveller’s needs and setting.

"This Indian garment works very well for journeys," Gupta added. "It is comfortable, presentable and easy to care for — addressing everything from cold cabins to untidy restrooms."

Her followers responded positively, with many commenters sharing similar experiences and appreciating the straightforward travel advice.

Why Experts Agree

Travel and wardrobe specialists say Gupta’s advice is sensible, particularly for those who favour traditional clothing. Salwar kameezes made from breathable fabrics offer freedom of movement and are simpler to launder than tight denim, while the dupatta serves multiple practical roles—from an impromptu blanket to head covering.

Fashion consultant Nishtha Sood commented, "Neena Gupta’s perspective is sensible: the salwar kameez is practical dressing. It suits varied climates, provides coverage and is straightforward to maintain."

Cultural Practicality

Gupta has long been praised for candid observations about ageing, fashion and life. Her latest recommendation reinforces how traditional garments can deliver both cultural resonance and everyday utility without following fleeting trends.

As Gupta put it with a smile, "People prefer track pants and tees when travelling, but this outfit remains a better option. It is comfortable, neat and versatile for many situations."

Takeaway for Travellers

The message is direct: travel attire need not be complicated or costly. Traditional clothes like the salwar kameez can combine convenience and style. For your next train or flight, consider packing a soft cotton or silk salwar kameez — a practical blend of tradition and travel-ready design, in Gupta’s view.
