NASA Commences Construction of a Sustainable Moon Base

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

NASA, the United States' premier space agency, has taken a significant step forward by entering the first phase of its initiative to establish a long-term lunar base. This comes shortly after the successful Artemis 2 lunar flyby mission.

To bolster this plan, NASA has allocated hundreds of millions of dollars in contracts to four American aerospace companies, aiming to set the stage for extended human missions and scientific exploration on the Moon.

As a key component of Phase One, Blue Origin is set to deliver two cargo landers that will ferry crucial equipment and lunar vehicles to the Moon's surface. These missions will focus on regions near the lunar south pole, a vital area for future exploration endeavors.

Astrolab and Lunar Outpost will be responsible for crafting the lunar terrain vehicles, designed to assist astronauts in traversing the lunar landscape while conducting research missions.

Firefly Aerospace, after its successful lunar landing last year, is tasked with deploying the inaugural drones on the Moon. These drones are engineered to explore challenging terrains and facilitate future construction efforts.

NASA aims to deploy this vital equipment before the first Artemis astronauts arrive, slated for a historic landing in 2028.

Looking ahead, NASA's long-term vision outlines that the next phase of the Moon base project will kick off in 2029 and extend into the early 2030s, focusing on building essential infrastructure such as a lunar power grid.

Finally, during the 2030s, the lunar base is anticipated to reach full operational capacity. NASA aspires to establish specialized habitats that will support extended astronaut stays on the Moon, marking a crucial milestone for sustained human presence beyond Earth.
