During the 17th stage of the Giro d’Italia, Jhonatan Narváez has successfully taken back the lead in the points classification for UAE Team Emirates-XRG.
The Ecuadorian national champion reinstated himself in the celebrated maglia ciclamino, or the purple jersey awarded for points, by achieving maximum points at the intermediate sprint on Wednesday’s stage.
Narváez has surpassed Paul Magnier of Soudal Quick-Step in the rankings, showcasing his abilities through remarkable performances, including three stage wins.
For stage 17, Narváez was part of an early breakaway contingent alongside teammates Jan Christen and Igor Arrieta, collaboratively strategizing to set him up for the intermediate sprint.
Arrieta played a crucial role by thwarting a significant offensive, allowing Narváez to surge forward and claim the top sprint points. Consequently, he regained the points jersey, which he will don again during the 18th stage.
UAE Team Emirates-XRG also targeted another stage win. Arrieta made an impressive mark in the breakaway, finishing just seconds after Michael Valgren of EF Education-EasyPost, the stage victor.
This outcome highlights another commendable day for UAE Team Emirates-XRG as they maintain momentum in their Giro d’Italia campaign.
