Nandani Sharma, the young pace sensation for Delhi Capitals, has made her mark in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) by becoming the first Indian bowler to take a hat-trick. During an exciting match against Gujarat Giants in Navi Mumbai on Sunday, the 24-year-old delivered a remarkable performance, despite her team's close loss.
With impressive figures of 5 for 33, Nandani showcased one of the season's finest bowling displays. This accomplishment places her alongside prominent bowlers in WPL history, including Issy Wong, Grace Harris, and Deepti Sharma, who have also achieved hat-tricks.
Her historic hat-trick unfolded in the 20th over, where she dismissed Kanika Ahuja, Rajeshwari Gayakwad, and Renuka Singh in three consecutive deliveries, igniting celebrations among her teammates.
About Nandani Sharma
Nandani, born in 2001 in Chandigarh, has cultivated a strong reputation as a promising fast bowler within India's domestic circuit. She has played for Chandigarh in various tournaments and has captivated selectors with her consistent performances in inter-zonal games as part of the North Zone Women.
Her ascent in the cricketing world led to her acquisition by Delhi Capitals for Rs 20 lakh in the WPL 2026 auction, a strategic move that’s proving to be highly beneficial.
What Nandani Shared Post-Match
After the match, Nandani credited her captain Jemimah Rodrigues and opener Shafali Verma for their ongoing support and for maintaining her composure under pressure, stating, “I was just focused on bowling at my target. Shafali and Jemimah were advising me before every delivery, and our strategy was straightforward—target the stumps. I didn’t anticipate the hat-trick, but the team encouraged me that wickets would follow.”
Additionally, she mentioned a critical adjustment in her spell, saying, “After my first over, I noticed that the batters were anticipating my stock ball, so I opted to incorporate variations. Luckily, it worked out. My brother, mother, and a close friend were here to support me, while the rest of my family tuned in from home. Their encouragement is invaluable to me.”
Delhi Capitals' Narrow Defeat
Despite Nandani’s extraordinary performance, the Delhi Capitals fell short in the match. Gujarat Giants secured a nail-biting four-run victory, driven by a spectacular 95 from Sophie Devine and a composed finish under pressure in the final over.
This win marked the second consecutive triumph for Gujarat, while Delhi Capitals faced their second setback of the season. Nevertheless, it was undeniably Nandani Sharma's night, solidifying her entrance into women’s cricket at the highest level.
