Bounou's Brilliance Sends Morocco to AFCON Final Against Senegal

Post by : Mina Rahman

In a thrilling semi-final that ended in a 0-0 deadlock after extra time, Morocco triumphed over Nigeria 4-2 in a penalty shootout, moving a step closer to ending their 50-year AFCON title drought. This remarkable feat unfolded in front of an electrified crowd of 65,458 at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, where the atmosphere was charged with anticipation.

Yassine Bounou emerged as the standout performer, executing two pivotal saves during the shootout. His composed demeanor and incredible reflexes proved instrumental in securing Morocco’s place in the final against Senegal.

The match was fiercely contested, with both teams struggling to capitalize on scoring opportunities throughout the full duration of 120 minutes. Nigeria, known for their attacking prowess in the tournament, found it challenging to penetrate Morocco’s well-drilled defense, while the Moroccan side failed to breach Nigeria's organized rear guard.

When the game transitioned to penalties, Morocco gained an advantage as Bounou blocked Nigeria’s first attempt from Samuel Chukwueze, sending the home fans into a frenzy. Nigeria's Stanley Nwabali responded by parrying Hamza Igamane's shot, creating a momentary shift in momentum.

Bounou's exceptional performance continued with a stunning save against Bruno Onyemaechi, allowing Youssef En-Nesyri to step up and decisively convert the winning penalty, igniting jubilant celebrations throughout the stadium. Aside from Igamane's miss, Morocco’s penalty strategy proved successful, showcasing the players’ composure under pressure.

Post-match, coach Walid Regragui praised the resilience of his squad, emphasizing their determination in what he deemed one of their toughest tests so far. He expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Moroccan supporters who wholeheartedly backed the team and emphasized the swift recovery needed for the upcoming final.

Amid mounting pressure to deliver the championship on home soil for the first time since 1976, the Moroccan team’s growing confidence has been palpable, especially after their inspiring quarter-final win over Cameroon.

Morocco’s next challenge lies in facing Senegal, who advanced after narrowly defeating Egypt 1-0 thanks to Sadio Mané’s goal, setting the stage for a high-stakes final between Africa's top-ranked teams.

For Nigeria, the loss will be bitterly felt. Two years ago, they fell at the final hurdle to Ivory Coast, and this year they aimed to secure their fourth AFCON title to match rivals Ghana. Despite leading the tournament scoring charts with 14 goals, Nigeria struggled to carve out significant chances in this crucial match, even opting to withdraw star player Victor Osimhen as time progressed. Coach Eric Chelle acknowledged the valiant efforts of his team, recognizing the tough task of competing against both Morocco and their fervent supporters.

The stadium atmosphere proved pivotal, with Moroccan fans passionately cheering for every Nigerian possession, a stark contrast to their earlier critiques during the group stages, showcasing a united front that propelled the team through challenging phases.

The match began with high energy as Morocco’s Brahim Díaz attempted an early shot that strayed wide, followed by Ademola Lookman forcing a save from Bounou. As the game progressed, both teams displayed defensive caution, making penalties loom ever nearer.

Morocco’s history of success in penalty shootouts, highlighted by their memorable World Cup victory over Spain in 2022, reaffirmed their confidence. With the final now in sight, Morocco's ambition to clinch the AFCON title on home turf remains alive, while Nigeria turns its focus to the third-place match against Egypt.
