Île Mercier Bridge Shut Amid Escalating Flood Risks

Post by : Shweta

In a move to ensure public safety, Montreal officials have shut down the Île Mercier bridge to vehicular traffic following a marked rise in water levels along the Rivière des Prairies. This precautionary measure took effect at 7 p.m. on Monday as flood risks increased in surrounding regions.

Connecting Île-Bizard with Île Mercier, the bridge serves as a key transit route. While pedestrian access remains available, drivers are strongly urged to seek alternative pathways. City authorities are actively monitoring the developing situation, with changing water levels attributed to seasonal variations and melting snow.

Local residents on Île Mercier are bracing for potential flooding, reminiscent of damaging floods in 2017 and 2019. Many are proactively installing water pumps, utilizing sandbags, and keeping emergency supplies at the ready. Some households have even organized boats as precautionary measures in case evacuations are necessary.

Montreal's Mayor, Soraya Martinez Ferrada, has clarified that no evacuation orders have been issued yet. Nonetheless, vigilance is key as officials conduct continuous evaluations of the situation. In other susceptible neighborhoods like Pierrefonds-Roxboro, certain roads have been closed to mitigate risks and enhance safety.

During spring, flood-prone areas in Montreal face formidable threats from rising temperatures that can lead to rapid snowmelt and increased river flow. Authorities recommend residents stay updated via city alerts and take all necessary precautions. Sandbags are being distributed to those in need, while emergency services remain in readiness.

Other regions in Quebec, such as Fort-Coulonge, are also contending with serious flooding issues. State of emergency declarations have been issued, with sandbags being provided to safeguard homes and public infrastructure.

Officials are maintaining close surveillance of the situation, urging community members to stay alert, adhere to safety protocols, and prepare for unexpected developments as water levels shift.
