BCCI's Selection Oversight: Mohammed Shami's Omission Raises Eyebrows

BCCI's Selection Oversight: Mohammed Shami's Omission Raises Eyebrows

Post by : Mina Rahman

Mohammed Shami, the seasoned fast bowler from India, has managed an impressive tally of 15 wickets in just three matches during the Ranji Trophy 2025/26 season. However, his stellar form has not earned him a spot in the Indian squad for the upcoming series against South Africa, as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has overlooked his selection.

Coach's Discontent with Selection Process

Expressing his discontent, Shami's coach, Mohammed Badruddin, has voiced strong opinions regarding the BCCI’s decisions, alleging that they are based on predetermined choices rather than merit. He dismissed the BCCI's fitness concerns as unfounded, stating that Shami's current form underscores his readiness to represent the national side.

“The selectors seem to be intentionally sidelining him. He is fit—taking 15 wickets across two games in Test matches affirm this. Clearly, he's being overlooked,” remarked Badruddin.

Questioning Selection Methods

Badruddin highlighted that the selection criteria may be swayed by T20 performance metrics instead of valuing achievements in the Ranji Trophy. He deemed the exclusion of Shami as not only erroneous but also predetermined.

Shami's Historical Performance Stands Out

Shami's last appearance for the Indian team was on March 9, 2025, during the Champions Trophy final against New Zealand, where he ranked as the joint second highest wicket-taker, bagging nine wickets over five matches. Yet, this has not been enough to secure him a place in either the India A or senior squads for the South Africa fixtures.

Optimism for Shami's Future

Despite feeling let down by the exclusion, coach Badruddin remains optimistic about Shami’s potential return to the national fold. He asserted that Shami’s impressive career, particularly his significant contributions in World Cup events, justifies a call-up.

“I believe he will return. When he does, he will come back in a way that leaves a lasting impression on everyone,” stated Badruddin.

Additionally, Shami may find opportunities in the upcoming IPL 2026 mini-auction, especially following a modest showing in IPL 2025 with the Sunrisers Hyderabad, providing him an avenue to display his skill set once more.
