As the renewable energy sector expands globally, the UAE stands out as a leader. A recent report from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) reveals that global renewable capacity reached an unprecedented 582 gigawatts (GW) in 2024, driven predominantly by solar energy, which alone accounted for 452GW. This surge is pivotal for achieving the UAE's Consensus target to triple renewable energy to 11.2 terawatts (TW) by 2030. Experts suggest that an annual increase of 1,122GW is essential worldwide to meet climate objectives.
Central to the UAE’s renewable energy strategy is the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, inaugurated in 2012 and operated by the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA). The facility has reached an impressive capacity of 3,860MW and is projected to exceed 8,000MW by 2030, far surpassing its initial aim of 5,000MW. Clean energy contributes 21.5% of DEWA’s total capacity, with projections to increase to 36% over the next decade, equating to a reduction of more than 8.5 million tonnes of carbon emissions annually.
The solar park employs the progressive Independent Power Producer (IPP) model, merging governmental vision with private investments and advanced technological solutions. Innovations such as artificial intelligence have enhanced photovoltaic efficiency from 11% to 24%, optimizing energy production without expanding land use.
This facility is more than a mere energy provider; it serves as a dynamic platform for innovation, aligning with Dubai’s ambition to emerge as a global leader in green technology. Currently in progress is its sixth phase, with an upcoming seventh phase planned to deliver an additional 2,000MW of photovoltaic power and a 1,400MW battery storage system, positioning it among the largest solar-plus-storage projects globally.
The park has garnered international attention for its fourth phase, which includes a 950MW development comprising 700MW of concentrated solar power (CSP) and 250MW of photovoltaic systems. This segment has set four Guinness World Records, including the tallest CSP tower at 263.126 meters, the largest thermal energy storage facility, and the longest uninterrupted CSP operation lasting 39 days.
Through these groundbreaking endeavors, the UAE is not just leading the charge in renewable energy but also crafting a blueprint for sustainability and economic efficiency that inspires global clean energy initiatives.
