Min Jin Lee's New Novel 'American Hagwon' Sheds Light on Korean Education

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

Renowned author Min Jin Lee, celebrated for her bestselling novel Pachinko, makes her literary return with American Hagwon, set to launch on September 29. This inquiry into the cultural significance of education resonates deeply within Korean society.

Hagwons, the private tutoring establishments prevalent in Korea, are akin to “cram schools.” They provide instruction in a myriad of subjects, from English to cooking. Lee clarifies that any private institution offering educational services qualifies as a Hagwon.

At 57, Lee describes herself as an “accidental historian,” artfully using her novels to probe into themes of history, societal dynamics, and issues revolving around race, gender, and class. American Hagwon is the third installment in her series focusing on Korea and its diaspora, succeeding Free Food for Millionaires (2007) and Pachinko (2017), the latter of which was both a National Book Award finalist and transformed into a popular series on Apple TV+. In 2024, its acclaim elevated it to 15th place in The New York Times' list of the best 21st-century novels.

Published by Cardinal, this book chronicles the upheaval experienced by a Korean family in light of unexpected life changes and the uncertainty of success, spanning narratives across Korea, Australia, and Southern California during the Asian financial crisis.

Reagan Arthur, Publisher and Senior Vice President at Cardinal, lauded Lee’s storytelling, describing it as a lens through which generational shifts are beautifully rendered in compelling characters that readers will root for.

Originally hailing from Seoul, Lee emigrated to New York City at age seven, later attending prestigious institutions like the Bronx High School of Science, Yale University, and Georgetown Law. Her meticulous approach to writing is informed by extensive research, travel, and heartfelt interviews, earning her the affectionate nickname of “the turtle” from her father for her steady yet deliberate work ethic.

Lee aims to provide a reflective lens on society, stating, “I want to hold up a mirror to society, and, as the kids say, do a ‘vibe check,’” indicating her desire to intertwine historical narratives with authentic human experiences.
