The head of Britain’s foreign intelligence service has delivered a strong warning about Russia in her first public speech since taking office. Blaise Metreweli, the new chief of MI6, said Russia under President Vladimir Putin remains an aggressive and expansionist power that poses a serious and long-term threat to international security.
Metreweli took over the leadership of MI6 in October, becoming the first woman to hold the role in the agency’s 116-year history. The position, often known by the letter “C,” is one of the most powerful and secretive jobs in British national security.
In advance remarks from her speech on Monday, Metreweli said that Russia’s actions are not accidental or temporary. She described Moscow’s behaviour as a deliberate effort to spread disorder beyond its borders. According to her, creating confusion and instability is a core part of Russia’s approach to dealing with other countries.
She made it clear that Britain’s support for Ukraine will not weaken. Metreweli said President Putin should have no doubts that the UK will continue to apply pressure in support of Ukraine and stand firm against Russian aggression. Britain has already imposed wide-ranging sanctions on Russian leaders, companies, ships, and intelligence agencies since Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022.
Her comments come at a sensitive time for Europe. Talks involving the United States, Ukraine, and European partners are taking place in Germany as leaders search for ways to reduce the fighting and explore the possibility of a ceasefire. These discussions are part of a broader effort to manage the conflict while maintaining strong support for Ukraine.
Beyond Russia, Metreweli also spoke about the changing nature of security threats. She stressed that modern intelligence work must rely more heavily on technology. Threats today include cyber attacks, online disinformation, and terrorism, which often move faster than traditional spying methods.
She said intelligence officers must be skilled not only in gathering information from people but also in using digital tools. According to her, MI6 staff need to be as comfortable working with computer code as they are speaking foreign languages or handling human sources. This shift, she said, is essential to protect Britain in a rapidly changing world.
On the same day, Britain’s top military leader also warned that the risk of wider conflict is rising. He called for a “whole society” approach to defence, meaning governments, businesses, and citizens must all play a role in strengthening national security.
Together, these warnings underline a clear message from the UK’s security leadership. Russia remains a major concern, global threats are becoming more complex, and countries like Britain must stay alert, united, and prepared for challenges that may last many years.
