Mets Make Strategic Trade for Peralta and Myers

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

In a bold move, the New York Mets have fortified their pitching lineup with the acquisition of ace Freddy Peralta and right-handed pitcher Tobias Myers from the Milwaukee Brewers. In return, Milwaukee acquires promising young talents Brandon Sproat and Jett Williams, both of whom are recognized among MLB's top 100 prospects by Baseball America.

Freddy Peralta, 29, had a remarkable 2025 campaign, posting a 17-6 win-loss record alongside a 2.70 ERA and racking up 204 strikeouts over 176⅔ innings pitched. His efforts earned him a second trip to the All-Star game as he led the National League in victories. Meanwhile, Tobias Myers, 27, showed his adaptability last season, going 1-2 with a 3.55 ERA across 22 games.

Mets president of baseball operations, David Stearns, stated, “Bringing in Freddy gives us another reliable starter to anchor our rotation. Tobias’ ability to contribute both as a starter and out of the bullpen adds much-needed versatility to our roster.”

This transaction comes shortly after the Mets signed free agent Bo Bichette and acquired center fielder Luis Robert Jr., underscoring their proactive strategy to enhance the team ahead of the 2026 season.

The Brewers, who have a history of trading star pitchers when their contracts are nearing an end, will now rely on their ace Brandon Woodruff, rookie Jacob Misiorowski, and the incoming Sproat and Williams to round out their rotation. Brewers president, Matt Arnold, remarked, “Losing Freddy is tough; however, these trades are essential for both teams moving forward.”

Peralta, who has not faced an injury setback since 2022, is on contract for $8 million this season, with the possibility of testing free agency following the World Series. Myers will be in contention for a significant position within the Mets’ rotation or bullpen.

Following this trade, the Mets' rotation now boasts Freddy Peralta, Nolan McLean, Clay Holmes, David Peterson, Sean Manaea, and Kodai Senga. To accommodate the new additions, the Mets have designated right-hander Cooper Criswell for assignment.

This trade is indicative of the Mets' ambitious offseason strategies as they strive to reinforce their pitching staff, aiming for high competitiveness in the 2026 season.
