Marine Le Pen, the far-right political figure, has voiced her intention for France to exit NATO’s integrated military command if she ascends to the presidency in the upcoming 2027 elections.
In an interview with BFM TV on Friday, she expressed that while maintaining NATO membership is essential, France should disengage from the alliance’s permanent military structure. Le Pen argued this would allow France to regain autonomy over its defense and military policies.
Le Pen criticized the reliance of Europe on the United States, claiming that countries are unduly swayed by U.S. presidential decisions, particularly those made under Donald Trump.
She emphasized the importance of collaborating with allied nations while advocating for a position outside NATO’s command framework.
This proposal was met with strong disapproval from France’s Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot, who labeled it “irresponsible” during a NATO ministers’ meeting in Sweden. He urged that, amid increasing security threats, France should enhance its NATO partnerships rather than withdraw.
Barrot further cautioned that allies in Europe, particularly those feeling pressure from Russia, might perceive such a move as a betrayal.
The discussion surrounding NATO has long been a contentious issue in France. Notably, former President Charles de Gaulle withdrew France from NATO's military command in 1966 to safeguard its strategic sovereignty, though the nation re-entered in 2009 under President Nicolas Sarkozy.
Le Pen’s remarks emerge as Europe ramps up its defense spending in response to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Recently, various political factions in France, including Le Pen’s National Rally party, have endorsed increased military funding in parliament.
Currently, her party is showing strength in several opinion polls ahead of the 2027 elections, though her candidacy hinges on an upcoming appeal court decision later this year.
