The Washington Commanders have announced that veteran quarterback Marcus Mariota will start in place of Jayden Daniels for their Week 3 matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders. Daniels, who sustained a knee sprain during the team's Week 2 loss to the Green Bay Packers, has not practiced this week and has been ruled out for Sunday's game.
This will be Mariota's first regular-season start since 2022. At 31 years old, he brings over a decade of NFL experience, including stints with the Tennessee Titans, Las Vegas Raiders, Atlanta Falcons, and Philadelphia Eagles. Offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury praised Mariota's professionalism and readiness, noting his strong performances in limited appearances last season.
Head coach Dan Quinn emphasized a cautious approach to Daniels' recovery, stating, "We're going to be smart, not just fast." While Daniels has been participating in individual drills, he has not met the team's standards for a full return to practice. The decision to sideline him ensures his long-term health and development.
Mariota's first start in three years comes against the Raiders, where he previously played from 2020 to 2021. Additionally, Raiders offensive coordinator Chip Kelly was Mariota's college coach at Oregon, adding a layer of familiarity and intrigue to the matchup.
