Malaysia is ramping up its initiatives to secure energy supplies, extending efforts through the end of 2026 as the ongoing global supply crisis disrupts economies and elevates costs. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim emphasized the government's collaboration with energy bodies and the industry to stabilize supply amid rising uncertainty in global markets.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof stated that Malaysia's energy reserves are projected to remain stable until July. However, in response to the global situation, authorities are hastening activities to bolster national energy security until December by looking to increase imports from international suppliers.
Fadillah noted that Petronas is proactively seeking alternative energy resources from various countries, including those in Africa, to shield Malaysia from deepening supply interruptions. Continuous efforts are underway to avert shortages that could disrupt key sectors such as industry and transportation.
The current global crisis has already spiked logistics and fuel costs, placing a strain on many sectors. Fadillah pointed out that industries such as healthcare and manufacturing are encountering difficulties due to shortages and rising import costs associated with the global energy scenario.
He cautioned that many Malaysians may not grasp the extent of the global crisis, as the country has managed relative stability thus far. Nonetheless, various government agencies and energy firms are diligently working to maintain supply chains and economic balance.
The government is also urging citizens and businesses to save on water and electricity as part of national conservation strategies. Authorities believe that reducing energy consumption can help prolong supply availability while minimizing the country’s vulnerability to international market fluctuations.
Fadillah added that the National Economic Action Council is conducting weekly consultations with industry actors and government representatives to assess the crisis’s effects on commerce, employment, and consumer pricing. The government is preparing measures to protect small and medium-sized enterprises while alleviating financial burdens on the public.
He affirmed that Malaysia is dedicated to balancing three key objectives in the energy landscape: ensuring long-term supply security, maintaining affordable public pricing, and promoting environmental sustainability in spite of ongoing global economic challenges.
